The Back Story:
"The Hawk"
Legendary surfer, surfboard designer and entrepreneur Dale Velzy was easily 30 years ahead of his time. He was a maverick who was key in launching the surf market in the early 1950’s.
At a time when surfing was in its infancy, Dale saw something bigger. In 1949, he opened the world’s first surf shop. Soon, his chain of shops sponsored a surf team that featured some of the biggest names ever assembled. Mickey Dora, Donald Takayama, Dewey Weber, and Mickey Munoz. They were all disciples of the “Hawk”, and set the standards for surfing excellence.
He was the first, to put his logo on T-shirts, surfboards, sponsored a woman surfer, and will always be highly regarded in the “Annuals of Surfdom.”
