The Back Story:

USS Arizona Memorial

A battleship that was built for and by the United States Navy in the mid-1910s. Named in honor of the 48th state’s recent admission into the union. Arizona’s overall displacement weight of 29,626 tons, with a length of 608 feet. On December 7, 1941, the Arizona was the most heavily damaged of all the vessels in Battleship Row, suffering three near-misses and four direct-hits from 800-kg bombs dropped by high-altitude planes. The blast destroyed the Arizona and sank her, as it consumed the lives of 1,177 of the 1,400 on board at the time - over half of the casualties suffered by the entire fleet on the “Day of Infamy.” The memorial, built in 1962, is accessible only by boat, it straddles the sunken hull of the battleship without touching it.
