The Back Story:

Ukulele & Lei Pattern

The Ukulele and lei depicted came from a genuine, vintage Hawaiian shirt dated 1940 and considered one of the finest of original American “folk art”.  The usual way mainlanders say the word is “you-ka-LAI-lee”, the correct pronunciation is actually “oo-koo-LEH-leh”.  Hawaiians adopted and adapted this instrument and it together with the hibiscus and flower necklace of greeting (the lei) have become standard icons of the Hawaiian islands.
