Musings on a Grape Leaf
This broad and knobby shape is instantly familiar to aficionados of “the grape”. Wine has intrigued and intoxicated man since his earliest days. We can only imagine the delight of the first people who discovered that the crushed and fermented fruit of the grapevine produced a heady drink.
Hail the noble grape leaf; it is the conduit through which sunlight produces the fruit that yields wine in the complex process called photosynthesis. While leaves of different grape varieties differ slightly, all are familiar to devotees of wine in all its appellations. In tasting rooms the world over, wine-makers uncork a new bottle and lift a glass in honor of the role a grapevine’s leafy canopy plays in its creation.
