Zebra Stripes
The Back Story:
The Mark of The Zebra
The zebra, whose closest relatives are horses and donkeys, are black animals with distinctive white stripes. On the African plain, where zebras are often prey for color-blind lions, their vertical striping patterns allow them to “hide” more easily by standing still in tall grass. Horizontal stripes on the animal’s rear and legs add to the illusion, especially when a herd of zebras scatters to avoid and confuse a predator. Zebra striping patterns, with slight variations, are unique to each animal. Nature’s patterns are both beautiful and practical. An animal’s fur pattern, for example, is unique to its species. Whether stripes, spots or some variation in-between, the purpose is camouflage.
