The Back Story:
Celtic Knots
Endless interlacing loops tracing a closed path, with no beginning or end, are characteristic of Celtic knots. These intricate designs have been interpreted by archaeologists in context with the culture and history of the Celtic peoples, but in truth, the Celts left no written records to support their significance. Over time, Christianity and the influence of other cultures changed the symbolism assigned to these motifs. In general, continual loops suggest unity, eternity and interconnectedness. Spirals represent reincarnation and the cycles of life and rebirth. Triangles depict the threefold dominions of earth, sea, and sky, while squares and fourfold shapes are shield knots, i.e. talismans to foil evil spirits.
