The Back Story:

Aztec Calendar

The Aztec people of Pre-Columbian Mexico assigned mythological and astronomical significance to the sun; for them “El Sol” was a religious deity.  When the Sun Stone (Piedra Del Sol) was unearthed in Mexico City in 1790, discoverers mistakenly referred to it as the Aztec Calendar Stone.
The Aztec name for the 25-ton, almost-12-foot-diameter and 3-foot-thick basalt disc is Cuauhxicalli Eagle Bowl; it is currently on display at the National Museum of Anthropology and History  Mexico City.  The images carved into the stone depict four disasters which led to the migration of the Mexican people to modern-day Mexico City, and pictographs indicate how they measured time.
