The Back Story:

Buffalo Nickel

This image of the bison is a uniquely American symbol.  Its model is known to have been a bull named Black Diamond, then a resident of New York City’s Central Park Zoo at that time. Only about 1,000 of the animals remained on the American Plains.
Classic Americana, this five-cent piece was minted between 1913 and 1938. Sculptor James Earle Fraser suggested its motif, combining an Indian warrior in profile and a powerful bison, both symbols of the fading West. Each design fills its side of the coin, with a minimum of wording. It’s a favorite of coin collectors everywhere,
and often used in fashioning Native American and Western jewelry.
