The Back Story:

An Extrodinary Industry Legacy

Perhaps the most noteworthy aircraft ever produced for airline use was the Douglas DC-3, a reliable, durable and easy to maintain passenger transport model introduced in 1935. It quickly became a mainstay of domestic airline service and did much to popularize air travel in the United States.
The DC-3 employed the latest aviation technology of the time: low-wing with trailing edge flaps, a single elevator and rudder, retractable landing gear and two cowled radial engines. It saw military service as the C-47 during World War II. Hundreds of DC-3s are still in service worldwide because of its ability to take off and land on unpaved runways.
