The Back Story:
An American Patriotic Song
The following stirring strains are often sung at sporting events and on other public occasions. Irving Berlin wrote the song in 1918, and revised it in 1938 as war threatened Europe. Singer Kate Smith performed the revised “God Bless America” during her radio broadcast on Armistice Day that year. It was an immediate sensation, and is considered by some to be America’s “unofficial” national anthem.
