Patriotic Elephant

The Back Story:

The "Grand Old Party"

An elephant, always facing to the right to signify conservatism, is the traditional symbol of the Republican Party, the youngest of America’s two major contemporary political parties. The party was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery activists, and Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president.
Republicans think of their party’s icon as strong, dignified and intelligent although the elephant was first portrayed as a stumbling symbol of Republican voters who were discontented with then-President Ulysses S. Grant by political cartoonist Thomas Nast of Harper’s Weekly in 1874. The easily recognizable elephant was picked up by other political cartoonists and soon came to symbolize the party itself.
