The Back Story:

Boca Grande

The Boca Grande Lighthouse built in 1890 and the oldest structure on Gasparilla Island once helped to guide hundreds of oceangoing ships into its port for the huge phosphate industry that sprang up in the early 1900s. The wooden lighthouse was constructed atop a series of iron pilings that elevated the structure, protecting it from frequent high water caused by storms and hurricanes of the gulf.

About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
