The Back Story:

Watch Hill

In the late 1700s, navigation among America’s waterways was dangerous; vessels venturing up the Chesapeake Bay toward Baltimore often ran aground on shallow shoals or were blown off course during poor weather. Eventually, the U.S. government constructed permanent structures along major waterways, for use in navigation.  Cove Point Lighthouse marks the northern entrance to the Patuxent River from Chesapeake Bay, standing 40ft high and was one of the first Lighthouses to be made of brick.

About the Artist: Paul M. Bradley Jr., an architect by profession, began drawing lighthouses after a New England vacation sparked his interest in the structures. His drawings appear quarterly in the Keeper's Log, a publication of the U.S. Lighthouse Society (www.uslhs.org).
