The Back Story:
The Magic of Fiji’s Masi Cloth
Look closely at one of the intricate patterns that are stenciled, stamped or smoked onto a Fijian hand-made “masi” bark-cloth. Simple flowers break through patterns that suggest the waves of the sea or a comb used to style the Fijian hair. Alternating triangles of ecru and brown create a pinwheel motion of tumbling, rolling, a playful pattern of light and dark, like that of a child’s toy. So well this reflects the personality of the people who in the midst of hard labor can bring forth an almost childlike enjoyment and splash and play in the waters they harvest.
