The Back Story:

The Chambered Nautilus

The Chambered Nautilus has survived relatively unchanged during the last
500 million years thus is often called a “living fossil”. This marine creature gets its name from its internal spiral chambers.  The largest, is a “living chamber” into which water is drawn in and out for swimming, buoyancy, and a safe place in which the animal may withdraw completely. The outer shell provides perfect camouflage in both deep and shallow waters.

From The Poem "The Chambered Nautilus" by Oliver Wendell Holmes:

“Thanks for the heavenly
 message brought by thee,
 Child of the wandering sea.”
