The Back Story:

Scallop Shell

A scallop is a marine bivalve mollusk, possibly best known for its beautiful and distinctive shell. The scallop shell carries with it many symbolic meanings in history and art. Many paintings of Venus, the Roman goddess of love and fertility, included a scallop shell in the painting to identify her. This is evident in Botticelli's classically inspired "The Birth of Venus," as a Venus rests on a large shell or by Titian and his portrayal of the goddess holding a shell in representation of her birth.
