The Back Story:

Queen Lili'uokalani

All the qualities that so haunt anyone who has experienced Hawaii are reflected by the design elements that go into Hawaiian quilts.  This quilt design was developed out of great love for Queen Lili‘uokalani, the last monarch of the Hawaiian kingdom (reign 1891-1893).  An ambitious, complex and strong-minded woman who’s deeply held beliefs led inevitably to clashes with foreign business interests, was forced to relinquish control of the islands to a government that favored annexation by the United States.
Feathers are a predominant design element here, because feather capes were symbols of power worn by the early island rulers.  In addition, this quilt repeats many symbols in denominations of eight, representing the eight Hawaiian islands.
