The Back Story:

Rooster Weathervane

Weathervanes are one of the oldest forms of weather prediction. Weathervanes are mentioned in the ancient writings of Mesopotamia, from over 3500 years ago. The Chinese also talk about strings or flags being used to read wind direction in writings dated to the 2nd Century B.C.

In the 9th century AD the Pope decreed that all churches must be adorned with the symbol of a rooster to portray the biblical story in which Christ claims that “the cock shall not crow” until Peter had denounced him three times. Roosters were later made into weathervanes, due to their prominence on high church steeples in towns, and thus the classic rooster weathervane was established.
