The Back Story:
A Seafaring Beauty
The proud cruising/racing yawl Odyssey presents a graceful silhouette on the water at an overall length of 58 ft. (42 ft. at waterline) with a main mast 72 ft. tall, a sail area of 1,500 sq. ft. and 13-ft. beam. Her sturdy hull of Oregon pine, with frames of three-inch steam-bent oak and spars of hollow Sitka spruce, has traveled over 60,000 nautical miles in some of sailing’s most challenging ocean races.
She was built and launched in 1938 at the
Stephens Brothers shipyard in Stockton, Calif., to the highest design standards for ocean racing vessels of the time, and has been in the family of the late Harry G. Steel, then president of U.S. Electrical Motors, Inc., since conception.
