The Back Story:

History of Skiing

For more than 5,000 years, people wishing to travel across snow, have been fastening lengths of wood to their feet. It is believed that early Vikings and Russians in what is now Norway used skis while hunting as a way to traverse snow covered terrain. The use of skis expanded throughout Scandinavia and then to Russia for transportation across the frozen landscape. Eventually skiing evolved into a sport, similar to cross-country skiing.

Different types and styles of skiing have evolved including the Nordic style (cross-country) and the Alpine style of speeding down mountain slopes (downhill & slalom). Skiing has become an exciting favorite winter sport.
