The Back Story:
Notable Downhill Skiers
Henri Oreiller won the first Olympic downhill event (St Moritz, Switzerland) in 1948. A member of the French underground in World War II, he had a reputation for careening fearlessly around courses like an acrobat. Jean-Claude Killy was a rebellious child, noted for being chased by a local priest in full robes and on skis, for missing bible study class. Before becoming a triple Olympic champion at the 1968 Winter Games in Gernoble, France Killy caused a stir when he dropped his pants after takeoff and finished a jump in long johns. Ingemar Stenmark from Sweden, who won 86 world cup competitions plus several gold in the Olympics, is the most successful downhill skier of all times.
