Description

The back of this coaster reads:

                                                                     Buffalo Nickel

"Classic Americana, this five-cent piece was minted between 1913 and 1938. Sculptor James Earle Fraser suggested its motif, combining an indian warrior in profile and a powerful bison, both symbols of the fading West. Each design fills its side of the coin, with a minimum of wording. It's still a favorite of coin collectors, and often used in fashioning Native American and Western Jewelry.

Although the indian was a composite of several studies, a handful of Native Americans earned a meager living in appearances at county fairs in the 1920's through the 190's, claiming to be the indian on the nickle."
